Why this course exists
Purpose
This course develops first responder awareness of explosive threat indicators, immediate actions, safety considerations and reporting requirements when encountering suspected IEDs, explosive hazards or suspicious items.
Who should attend
Target Audience
This course is suitable for police, fire and rescue, ambulance personnel, civil protection staff, emergency services, security personnel, border security staff, site response teams, NGO security staff and other first responders who may be required to operate in or near explosive threat environments.
What is covered
Course Overview
First responders may be the first personnel to encounter suspicious items, explosive threat indicators, blast scenes or unstable incident environments. Their immediate actions can significantly affect public safety, responder safety, scene preservation and the effectiveness of follow-on specialist response. This course introduces practical explosive threat awareness for non-specialist responders. It focuses on recognising indicators, avoiding unsafe actions, establishing initial safety measures, reporting accurately, supporting cordon and evacuation decisions and handing over to authorised specialist personnel. The course does not qualify participants to conduct IEDD, EOD, search or disposal actions.

How it is delivered
Delivery Format
Delivery may include classroom instruction, practical recognition exercises, scenario-based discussion, table-top tasks, site walk-throughs, incident reporting drills and facilitated after-action review.
Prerequisites
Entry Requirements
No previous EOD or IEDD qualification is required.
On completion
Expected Outcome
On completion, participants should be able to recognise potential explosive threat indicators, take safe immediate action, report accurately, support initial incident control and understand when to withdraw, isolate and hand over to authorised specialist personnel.
