Why this course exists
Purpose
This course supports EOD qualified / experienced personnel from military, police, civil protection or security backgrounds who are transitioning into, supporting or being seconded to humanitarian mine action programmes.

Target Audience
This course is suitable for personnel with a military, police, civil protection, security or EOD related operational background who require orientation into HMA principles, standards, procedures and operating culture before working within or supporting an HMA programme.
What is covered
Course Overview
Personnel from military, police or security backgrounds may bring useful field, search, explosive ordnance or operational experience. However, HMA operates under a different framework, including humanitarian principles, NMAA direction, land release methodology, community engagement, quality management, information management and approved HMA procedures. This course provides a structured conversion pathway to help participants understand the HMA environment.

- Introduction to HMA.
- Humanitarian principles and operating culture.
- National authority, NMAS and organisational SOP frameworks.
- Land release principles and evidence-based decision-making.
- Differences between military/security clearance and HMA operations.
- Survey, clearance, EOD, BAC and risk education overview.
- Community liaison and affected-population engagement.
- Quality management, reporting and documentation.
- Safety, supervision and role limitations.
- Integration into HMA teams and programmes.
How it is delivered
Delivery Format
Delivery may include pre-course learning, classroom instruction, guided discussion, case studies, field demonstrations, practical orientation, scenario-based exercises and mentoring.
Prerequisites
Entry Requirements
Participants should be physically able to conduct field-based training. Entry requirements include holding an IMAS EOD / IEDD Level 2 or above equivalent qualification with military, police, civil protection, security or related operational background.
On completion
Expected Outcome
On completion, participants should understand the HMA operating framework, recognise the differences between previous military or security experience and HMA requirements, and be better prepared to operate safely and appropriately within an approved HMA programme.
